How it began
I have always loved reading, and remember that moment as a small child when reading clicked into place for me. From that point, books were my best friends. My first “serious” job after leaving university was as a newspaper sub-editor, and it was a boost to find that my ease with the English language was in demand. I then went off on several tangents for many years, including spending 12 years administering government and other public grants to businesses, research organisations and the not-for-profit sector. I really enjoyed this work but books and words were calling me, and so it was that in 2012 I did some intensive training and became a freelance editor/proofreader, initially under the business name Wordblink.
As a reader, I have always loved children’s fiction. I love the layering in children’s books, so that there’s something for parents and children to enjoy. As I have got older I have increasingly enjoyed reading memoirs rather than fiction. My favourite sorts of memoirs are travel ones: those about people setting up home in other parts of the world, or doing cycling or walking trips. They give me room to dream and to think: what if? It's no surprise that I am increasingly editing memoirs too.
In the office
I support dyslexic clients with their work, and alongside work for other business clients I also edit and proofread non-fiction books (such as self-help, leadership and wellness). While memoirs are a growing area of work for me, I also enjoy the challenge of helping shape business books, ensuring they are clear, consistent and an engaging read.
I am a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). I have had training with the Publishing Training Centre, CIEP and others. I regularly attend further training and keep in touch with other editors via online forums and groups.
I have a BA in English and Linguistics and an MA in Children’s Literature.
Out of the office
When I'm not at my desk I enjoy walking and being out in nature or in beautiful gardens with my family. Skylarks, Highland coos and hills are among the things that make me happy!
I live in the South Downs in Hampshire, UK, not far from the ferry terminal to France. I love travelling and often have plans in the wings for the next adventure, sometimes inspired by books or TV series. The subtitles are always on here!
